“I’m calling to ask Councilmember Blumenfield to vote YES on item 12 on Wednesday. I am a renter in Los Angeles and I am deeply concerned about the upcoming 7-9% rent increase. This increase would place an enormous burden on my household and those of my neighbors, and it would increase evictions and homelessness. Extend the rent freeze!”

What exactly is happening on Wednesday, November 1?

Last week, Hugo Soto-Martínez and Eunisses Hernandez introduced a motion to the L.A. City Council Housing & Homelessness Committee that would extend the current rent freeze by 6 months, until August 1, 2024.

On Wednesday, November 1, the Housing and Homelessness Committee will hold a vote on the motion. If it passes, then the next step will be a full City Council vote later on.

If the motion doesn’t pass, then it’s very likely that hundreds of thousands of tenants across the city will receive enormous rent increases on February 1, 2024.

The L.A. Tenants Union demands an extension of the rent freeze through 2024. If this motion passes, we can use the six months to fight for permanent changes to the Rent Stabilization Ordinance that would prevent the planned 7-9% rent increase in 2024 and prevent large increases going forward.
