On Tuesday, November 14th, L.A. City Council voted to allow landlords to raise the rent in RSO units 4%, plus an additional 1% if the landlord pays for gas and an additional 1% if they pay for electricity. This increase is allowed starting February 1, 2024.

City Council considered an amendment to extend the rent freeze; only Hugo Soto-Martinez, Eunisses Hernandez, and Nithya Raman voted yes.

On Tuesday Nov. 14, City Council will vote on whether to pass a motion allowing landlords to raise the rent 4-6% on February 1st, 2024, or keep in place the current plan to allow them to raise the rent 7-9%.

November 1:
LA city councilmembers refuse to extend rent freeze, will allow 6% hikes

Read Jack Ross’s story in the L.A. Public Press here.
On November 1, the Housing and Homelessness Committee was supposed to vote on a motion to extend the rent freeze by 6 months. Instead, Bob Blumenfield introduced an amendment to allow landlords to raise the rent 4-6% on February 1. Marqueece Harris-Dawson seconded the amenment. Nithya Raman chose to bring the rent increase version rather than the rent freeze version to a vote. It passed. Now it goes to full City Council for a vote. We don’t have a date for that yet.

Tenants who lost their jobs during the pandemic are still paying off their rent debt. Months of righteous strikes have cut into hotel and entertainment workers’ incomes. At a time when 5,000 evictions are filed each month, ANY RENT INCREASE IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH. WE DEMAND 0%.

We call on all tenants across the city to join us in the streets on SUNDAY DECEMBER 3 to demand FREEZE THE RENT, STOP THE EVICTIONS, and INVESTIGATE THE LA HOUSING DEPARTMENT.
